Michael C. Gerson‘s practice is focused on estate planning, administration of trusts and estates, and taxation. He is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and certified as a Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law and Taxation Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. He served on the Executive Committee for the Trusts and Estates Section of the State Bar of California from 2008 through 2014.
Mr. Gerson joined HARTOG, BAER & HAND in January 2011, after practicing many years in Santa Barbara, California. He represents families in their inter-generational planning and advises individuals, beneficiaries, and professional fiduciaries in trust and estate administration matters. Mr. Gerson is experienced in federal gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax and federal and state income tax matters, and has advised clients on numerous tax audits.
Mr. Gerson is a prolific speaker and writer on trust and estate matters and taxation. He has spoken at events sponsored by the State Bar of California, Continuing Education of the Bar, and numerous bar associations and estate planning councils throughout California. He is a former editor of the California Trusts and Estates Quarterly, and has written multiple articles for that publication. Mr. Gerson is the author of Chapter 4, Spouses and Registered Domestic Partners: Rights, Liabilities, and Special Transfer Procedures, Decedent’s Estate Practice, 2nd edition (CEB).
Mr. Gerson received his LL.M. in Estate Planning from the University of Miami, Florida in 1999. He graduated from Pomona College in 1992 and obtained his J.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1995, where he was an editor on the Law Review. Mr. Gerson is active in philanthropic organizations, and has been volunteering in his local community for many years. He enjoys watching English Premier League matches and traveling.
